Research

Sports science is one of those disciplines in which working with and for people is central. Its research is therefore characterised by a strong application orientation. Its central topics come from various areas of movement, play and sport, such as school, recreational, competitive or health-related sport. Sports science coordinates and integrates contributions from different disciplines or develops original interdisciplinary approaches to these fields. Sports science in Heidelberg is composed of three research areas.

Research areas at the ISSW

Sport and Education

Research activities focus on the theoretical development and empirical study of educational potential in informal and institutionalised children's and youth sport, as well as on research into school sport and teaching. A further focus is the development and evaluation of concepts of movement education in kindergartens. In the context of teacher training, research activities that build a bridge between subject didactics and empirical educational research are also to be strengthened.

Sport Psychology

The research work investigates various fundamental and applied topics in social and sport psychology. The aim is to explain, predict and change human experience and behaviour in social and sporting contexts. A central focus lies in judgement and decision-making research.
