Henning Plessner studierte von 1986 bis 1992 Psychologie an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig. 1997 promovierte er im Fach Psychologie an der Technischen Universität Chemnitz-Zwickau, 2004 folgte die Habilitation an der Fakultät für Verhaltens- und Empirische Kulturwissenschaften der Universität Heidelberg.
Nach Stationen als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und Hochschulassistent in Hildesheim und Heidelberg, einer Theodor-Heuss-Gastdozentur an der New School University in New York und einer Professurvertretung in Göttingen war er von 2008 bis 2010 Professor für Sozialpsychologie am Institut für Psychologie der Universität Leipzig. Seit 2010 ist er Professor für Sportpsychologie am Institut für Sport und Sportwissenschaft der Universität Heidelberg.
